Flea Interview with CNN – A Red Hot Chili Pepper turns 50

By Red Hot Chili Peppers News on October 17, 2012

Red Hot Chili Peppers Bassist, Flea Michael Balzary talks to CNN on his 50th Birthday.
By Denise Quan, CNN – Published October 17th, 2012

October 16th marked Flea’s 50th birthday, and the iconic bass player of the Red Hot Chili Peppers held an event celebrating both his life and his life’s focus on giving back.

An army of caterers scurried around his Los Angeles backyard on Tuesday, preparing for a party that was a birthday bash as well as a fundraiser for the Silverlake Conservatory of Music, the nonprofit school Flea co-founded 11 years ago.

Flea’s days of rock star excess are clearly over — unless you count the silent auction, where a Banksy drawing of a rat fetched $100,000 and a spirited bidding war erupted between actor Owen Wilson, musician Ben Harper and producer Rick Rubin over a crayon-colored cashmere blanket that ultimately sold for $2,250.

Shortly before his guests arrived, Flea reflected on the first half-century of his life — which has been just as colorful as the cashmere blanket that caused such a ruckus during the silent auction.

Flea says his Helen Burns EP is not rhcp music or even close to it. It's a trippy freakout.

The EP was recorded shortly after the Stadium Arcadium Tour and will feature mostly instrumental songs, with Flea playing most of the instruments, including Trumpet, Bass, Synthesizers, Drum machine, Piano, and a “bunch of other shit”. American singer/songwriter, Patti Smith will also perform vocals on at least one track. In one of his tweets Flea described the sound as “not rhcp music or even close to it. it is a trippy freakout”.

The Helen Burns EP will be available in digital and vinyl formats. Fans will be able to specify how much they’d like to pay for the digital version. An autographed vinyl version will also be released for $75.00, which also includes a piece of Flea’s Bass String which was used during one of the Red Hot Chili Peppers’ Concerts.

More info coming soon…

By Red Hot Chili Peppers News on July 12, 2012

Red Hot Chili Peppers Guitarist Josh Klinghoffer reveals more information about the ‘I’m With You’ B-Sides, including an exclusive look at the cover artwork of two of the nine B-Sides releases. Josh also reveals that one I’m With You B-Side will be an eight-minute song which will fill both sides of one single! By Patrick Flanary for Rolling Stone – Published July 12th 2012

Josh Klinghoffer reveals more info about I'm With You B-Sides

Almost exactly a year after releasing I’m With You, their first album with guitarist Josh Klinghoffer, the Red Hot Chili Peppers will stagger the release of 17 unheard outtakes from those sessions over the next several months, both digitally and on seven-inch vinyl singles.

Beginning in August, the band will issue two songs at a time on nine separate 45s, with one exception: an eight-minute rocker captured in a single studio take that will occupy both sides of a single, as Klinghoffer told Rolling Stone from a recent tour stop in Berne, Switzerland.

“We’re going to have to do that old trick where it fades out and fades back in on the B-side,” he said of “In Love, Dying,” one of the tracks Warner Bros. has not yet officially named. In June the label announced only six titles: “Strange Man” b/w “Long Progression” (due August 14th); “Magpies” b/w “Victorian Machinery” (September 11th); and “Never is a Long Time” b/w “Love of Your Life” (October 2nd).

Here’s an exclusive look at the first two of the sets nine forthcoming seven-inch singles jacket covers by Kelsey Brookes!

“These songs were always sort of kicking around, and we always intended on putting them out in one way or another,” Klinghoffer said. “It’s not as much of a splash, but it’s really all working out for the better. To be honest, there’s certain songs that, when we initially came up with the sequence for the record, I was a little like, ‘Hmmm, we’re not putting that one on?’”

One of those included “Long Progression,” which will serve as the B-side of the first seven-inch (it was sacrificed for “Goodbye Hooray” at the last minute). Another cut, “Victorian Machinery,” “sounds like a big three-headed monster playing drums,” Klinghoffer said, adding that the band captured “absolute magic” with “Never Is a Long Time,” a “pop-tastic” number featuring Greg Kurstin on piano.

“It’s really one of those cases where they had too many good songs to fit on an album,” said Kurstin, who also played on 1999′s Californication. “They have this cohesive thing in the studio – when they get that take, that’s the take that they keep.”

After joining the band in July 2009, Klinghoffer wrote and practiced with frontman Anthony Kiedis, bassist Flea and drummer Chad Smith for almost a year before they recorded several albums’ worth of material between September 2010 and the following February. Rather than release it all as a double album, as they did with their previous one, 2006′s Stadium Arcadium, the group preserved the best of the outtakes for this collection.

“It’s always difficult, but we use a democratic process and the songs with the most votes are usually the backbone of the album,” producer Rick Rubin wrote in an email. “I can just say as is always the case, some of my personal favorites don’t make the cut. I’m sure everyone in the band can tell you the same.”

Klinghoffer said that the remaining 17 unreleased songs from the I’m With You sessions – they recorded 48, after all – could eventually see the light of day. “It’s possible,” he said. “We just had so much material back then that certain things just straight-up didn’t get enough attention. There’s a couple that will probably just remain in our iPods.”

Meanwhile, though Josh Klinghoffer said RHCP have not written any official songs while on the road, he noted that the band demoed some material during Anthony Kiedis’ recovery from foot surgery, which postponed their tour for two months earlier this year.

Red Hot Chili Peppers Release Brendan’s Death Song Music Video

By Red Hot Chili Peppers News on June 29, 2012

The Red Hot Chili Peppers released their music video for Brendan’s Death Song on June 28th 2012 – Their fourth single from I’m With You. Shot in the style of a Jazz Funeral, the video was recorded in New Orleans on May 21st 2012 and was directed by Marc Klasfeld, who also directed the music videos for The Adventures of Rain Dance Maggie and Monarchy of Roses.

A dedication to Brendan Mullen
Both the song and video of Brendan’s Death Song is dedicated to Brendan Mullen, who was a longtime friend of the Red Hot Chili Peppers and one of the first music promoters to take notice of the band. Back in 1983, Anthony Kiedis and Flea visited Club Lingerie in Los Angeles where they played their demo tape for Mullen while dancing around like maniacs in typical peppers style. What Mullen heard and saw of the duo impressed him and so he offered the Red Hot Chili Peppers an opening slot at an upcoming Bad Brains show. Since their first encounter, Anthony Kiedis and Flea became longtime friends with Brendan Mullen. RHCP credits Mullen with being one of their first major supporters.

Johnny Marr talks about Collaborating with John Frusciante on The Empyrean – Guitar World Interview July 2012

By Red Hot Chili Peppers News on June 21, 2012

Johnny Marr talks briefly about what it was like to collaborate with John Frusciante on The Empyrean. Fan Q&A in the July 2012 issue of Guitar World Magazine.

Johnny Marr Guitar World July 2012

Johnny Marr Guitar World July 2012

Q: I love the tracks you did with John Frusciante on his album The Empyrean. John has such a distinct musical vision. What was it like collaborating with him? – Sophie Caley

JM: John is always keen to avoid the obvious. He’s someone who’s very into emotion in music. He has idealism about sound. When I worked with him on that record, he struck me as someone who was always searching. He’s not at all blasé. If you’re hearing him playing a sound that is very clean, to John it’s the result of him looking for something that’s pure. Every sound he puts together is deliberate and meaningful to him. When we did those songs he inspired me, so I worked very quickly. I would grab an acoustic, put it into a drone and play by ear without worrying about being too precise. I’d go with my feelings. Then for another song I’d grab a Strat and just do harmonics. He let me do a lot of textures. I don’t think it will surprise anyone to hear this, but John is a very deep guy.

Johnny Marr is credited with playing electric guitar on “Enough of Me” and electric and acoustic guitar on “Central”

So here’s the problem. It’s 17 December 2009, and the biggest band on the planet has lost a limb. John Frusciante – the guitar visionary present at the birth of all the Chilis’ greatest moments – has quit for the second time, and suddenly the hiatus following the Stadium Arcadium tour looks like a full-stop. In a diplomatic MySpace statement, Frusciante’s solo aspirations make more sense than in 1992, when he left to focus on smack, painting and losing his teeth, but thanks to the internet, the world goes even more berserk this time around.

Fans rage. Forums buzz. MTV pitches in with a list of possible replacements, from the just-about-feasible (previous Chilis player Dave Navarro) to the downright-daft (Nick Zinner). Josh Klinghoffer didn’t even make the shortlist. As such, when the 30 year old was unveiled as Frusciante’s official successor in early 2010, the world took a moment before it clicked. He was perfect. Adept on multiple instruments from his A-list session years, but fizzing with original ideas, he’d been the Chilis backup man in 2007, was a close friend and collaborator of John Frusciante, and had even inherited his ’67 Custom Telecaster. With last year’s I’m With You, cynicism evaporated, and you sense this month’s British mega-shows at Knebworth and Sunderland will be final vindication.

“I promised myself I would never read the internet pages,” says the ever-modest guitarist when we ask about early fanbase backlash. “All I can go on is what I see at the shows [and] it seems like everyone is really positive. I have a low self-opinion a lot of the time, and if I sat there and thought about the fact I’m not John, I might be equally quick to beat myself up…”

During an interview with Josh Klinghoffer. You may find yourself thinking: ‘lucky bastard.’ In reality, luck is less of a factor than talent and halls. “I dropped out of high school when I was 15 and sorta devoted myself to becoming a guitarist,” he recalls. “I didn’t have any plans about what I was going to do with my life. I just knew that I wanted to play music… so I started playing guitar, mainly by figuring out other people’s music. Which I was pretty good at. So I became, in my mind, a guitarist pretty quickly, although then to now even, I feel like I missed out on bits of proper guitar education. I feel like I’ve been playing catch up ever since.”

Leading up to the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame Induction Ceremony on April 14th 2012, Anthony Kiedis, Flea and Chad Smith spoke to Cleveland.com in seperate phone interviews about the Red Hot Chili Peppers’ past present and future. The interviews were then published on May 31st 2012.

The Red Hot Chili Peppers have earned their share of accolades, from Grammy Awards to gold records. So where does getting into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame rank?

“Hmmm,” mused singer Anthony Kiedis. “I actually haven’t been known to rank accolades, but there is something strangely rewarding about this acknowledgment.

“I like the unlikeliness of it, I suppose. We started off as gutter-garage-punks in Hollywood in ’83, without any intentions of doing anything other than rocking and having fun . . . . That it would one day lead to this kind of acknowledgment, the pinnacle of all acknowledgments — I like that.”

Josh Klinghoffer goes shopping for new Guitars in Chicago Illinois

By Red Hot Chili Peppers News on May 31, 2012

Before the Red Hot Chili Peppers show at the Allstate Arena in Rosemont, Illinois on May 28th 2012, RHCP Guitarist Josh Klinghoffer stopped by The Chicago Music Exchange Music Store looking for a ’59 Fender Stratocaster with a rosewood fret board and a different neck than the ’58 he’s currently touring with. Chicago Music Exchange’s Dan Wean showed him their early pre-CBS Strat collection. As soon as he had the 1959 Sunburst Stratocaster in his hands he knew it was the one. He went into one of their amp rooms and returned saying it was the “best guitar I’ve ever played”.

Josh Klinghoffer with his 1959 Sunburst Stratocaster and 1973 Blue Ice Metallic Fender Coronado

In the end Josh ended up buying a 1959 Sunburst Stratocaster, a 1973 Blue Ice Metallic Fender Coronado and a Semie Moseley signed ’65 Mosrite bass!

Josh invited the staff at the store to the Chili Peppers Allstate show where they witnessed him play the ’59 on almost all of the band’s hits. His immediate attachment to this guitar comes as no surprise to the staff at CME; this particular ’59 was rescued from a burning house by its original owner. CME shared this history with Josh and after the show he told them that when he was playing he “felt the mojo” that the ’59 possesses.
