Reviews for this album:

Ollie’s review of Blood Sugar Sex Magik - Written By Frusciante#1

The Power Of Equality:

As you hear the first lyrics of the song which are: “I got a soul that can not sleep in night when something just ain’t right. ” and as you listen on the lyrics of this song in particular are more similar to something that you would hear Rage Against The Machine singing about e.g. “Death is the message of the Klu Klux Klan“ . From this beginning song you can already hear how important Flea’s bass is in this album. Especially in the solo of the song where Flea’s pooping sound from his bass plays behind the guitar of John, truly wonderful. “Madder than a motherfucker lick my finger” is one of favourite lyrics from this song. 4/5

If You Have To Ask:

The feeling of funk rock here is put across well with John’s guitar, the muting of some of the chords gives an impression of staring and stopping and gives it a real feeling funk. This line basically sums up the funk. “Funky motherfucker will not be told to go.” and “To the funk I fall into my new ride”. The word motherfucker has already been used a few times haha! The solo of this song where the bass and the guitar and drums all play in unison I think is one of my favourite parts in this album. This is the first song where you really hear the capability of John’s guitaring, especially at the end. 4/5

Breaking the girl:

The video for this is an odd one…which I just saw a couple of days ago. Personally I don’t think this should have been released as a single as I don’t thinks its that strong. The gist of this song I think is about taking the virginity away from a girl. “Twisting and turning you breaking the girl.” kind of gives it away. If anybody reading this has seen the funky monks DVD the drumming solo where they all hit random metal objects is very funky though. 3/5

Funky Monks:

The name for this song came about because during the recording of Blood Sugar Sex Magik all the band members (apart from Chad because he was too scared to stay in the “haunted mansion“) stayed in a mansion and just recorded this album without any of the distractions from outside life. This meant they were able to focus on just creating this great music and as John says on the DVD its like we are monks. Enough said about that. The funk bass in her and the idea of the guitar playing in-between the gaps of the bass give the music a very funky feeling. I like the guitar solo in this song also very much but I think the lyrics do bring the song down a bit. The riff and the rhythm though is very funky! 3/5

Suck My Kiss:

“Hell I’m sailing yeah” what a powerful start to this song. This is my favourite Chili Peppers song of all time, I just think it is so powerful and amazing! “should’ve been could’ve been would’ve been dead if I didn’t get the message going to my head, I am what I am, most motherfucker don’t give a damn.” I love these lyrics so much it is unbelievable. I think the message behind this song is be what you want to be, don’t be forced into thing “free from a world that hurts me” is a good example of this. The guitar in this song I think acts as a second bass in some sections, wonderful! The guitar solo in this song, the first time I listened to it almost made me cream my pants it was so good. Its so simple to play though but very effective for the song. The rhyme scheme from Anthony lyrically is amazing too! Chad’s drumming too is so unbelievably funky, very simple again but is very effective for the song. The video fro this song too with footage of them in the mansion and of the US troops coming back home gives another dimension to the song. 5/5

I Could Have Lied:

This song is very sad if you listen to the lyrics deeply. “I could have lied I’m such my eyes could never, never keep their cool, showed her and I told her how she struck me but I’m fucked up now.” The guitaring from John here is to touching and even in the aggressive parts of the song he tries to be so gentle to keep in contact with the meaning of the song. Chad’s drumming too here is very delicate to keep in touch with the song. The solo of the song as it dies away just send a shiver down your spine and in a way it makes you sad by itself. Flea’s bass is very constant in this song, during some parts it follows the rhythm of John and in others it follows the drum of Chad. Although breaking the girl was attempting to be sad, this is the first time in the album that you feel sadness. 5/5

Mellowship Slinky In B Major

This is a funky song and tries to get you happy again after the sadness of I could have lied. The guitaring and bass playing here is quite similar in style to if you have to ask. Anthony’s lyrics through this song are quite fast sometime and keep in the similar style that the song is going for. The piano which you here in the background played by flea I don’t think does that much for the song in some parts. I like this guitar solo though, its nice. I don’t really understand the meaning of the songs so if anybody knows what it is I would appreciate it if you could enlighten me! 3/5

The Righteous and The Wicked

The pumping bass line of the flea and the funky drumming by Chad are what you hear at the start to this song. This really brings you into this song well, the lyrics of this too are similar to that you would hear from Rage Against the Machine, the idea of politics and “praying for a better day”. This next line of lyrics I think are quite strong: Holy mother earth crying into space, tears on her pretty face I thought she had been raped” I like the guitar at the end of this line too which sound like it is trying t cover up the word raped hehe its cool. The guitaring ability here is good throughout the main body of the song but the solo really does make the guitar in this song sound a hell of a lot better. Throughout this song the bass is really humping you face and the drum goes with this rhythm so well. 4/5

Give It Away:

This is the song which most of my friend associate with BSSM. “What I got you gotta give it to your mamma, what I got you gotta give it to your pappa, what I got you gotta give it to your daughter, do a little dance and then you drink a little water.” the rhyming here is so great , all through the song this cool rhyming scheme continues. The bass in the background of this song fits in the gap of the guitaring by John which I love, it such a simple tune but again it works to perfection. Chad’s drumming in the background really is the backbone to this song and even when none of the strings are playing the drumming still continues in the background. This bass line has to be one of my favourites bam bam bam….bam bam bam…bam bam bam bam..etc…hehe. The outro to this song is a bit weak I feel for such a powerful song lyrically and musically but oh well although I do like the drumming at the end. It still rocks out loud! 4/5

Blood Sugar Sex Magik:

Personally I think this song should have been released as a single because it sis so good! The powerful drumming is the first thing you hear in the song and the mellow, slow dirty guitar by John. The bass of flea in the background gives you the rhythm of the song as the lyrics of Anthony flow on top perfectly. “blood sugar sucker fish in my dish, how many pieces do you wish”. Not quite sure what this means but I like it a lot. “she must be moist” hehe. “blood sugar baby, she magik sex magik sex magik” quite blatantly this song is sexual and about love making. Could you guess that eh? Hehe. The solo section in this song is so wonderful live on the off the map DVD, well worth watching. The guitar at the end really comes into its own as the bass and drums play in the background. Wonderful! 5/5

Under The Bridge:

The start of this song John decides to play happy chords to make the song seem happy at the start but as you listen to the lyrics they really make you think. The idea of this song came up when Anthony was driving home one day from recording session and he had a moment where he felt like there was no body in the world that liked him, this song came into his head and when he got home he wrote it out. This was the first song that the Chili’s played that they classed as a ballad. “Its hard to believe that there’s nobody out there, its hard to believe that I’m all alone.” gives you a séance of the loneliness he must have been feeling during this time. The drumming here is very simple and tries to keep in with the song. The bass plays in the background as the background of the song. The guitar is lovely throughout and when it gets to the middle of the song when Gail Frusciante and some of her choir join in, this kind of gives it an epic ending as the solo of the guitar and the entrance of the bass finish the song off wonderfully. The video for this song is so lovely too. Scarryman: Anthony didnt write this as a song he wrote it as a poem about his heroin addiction and he used to shoot up under a bridge by his house hence the lyric "under the bridge downtown where i drew some blood" and the she he talks about in the song is the actual heroin and his "friendship" with it . 5/5

Naked In The Rain:

Yet again as before the sad songs always seem to be followed by a happy one, this song is good for the drumming and the bass but apart from that I don’t think its that wonderful really. I don’t see the point of this song, for the other songs so far I have seen a point but no this one really. I just think the lyrics have been to on it willy-nilly because its such a cool bass line “naked in the rain, doctor doo-little what’s your secret?” I don’t understand that. The flea bass solo in the middle I like too. The guitar is good here but not so good as I could be I think. The solo at the end is good nothing mind-blowing. 2/5

Apache Rose Peacock

I love the bass in this song and the guitar playing over it, this is my favourite bass song on the album for flea. This song is about new Orleans surprisingly form the ( lyrics you can tell this ). “oh good brother just when I thought I had seen it all , my eyes pooped out, my dick got hard and I dropped my jaw” This is such a funky line and the guitar in this section goes so well with it. During the second verse a piano sound comes in, I cant remember what instrument it is though, its like a mini piano thing, I like this. This song also had a very sexual feeling to it with the lyrics and also put across by the pumping bass and the guitar following it in certain parts, it gives the music of a stopping and starting movement. The drumming in this song I enjoy too because it is typical Chad and very powerful as the driving force. 3.5/5

The Greeting Song:

This song also has the kicking drum and the pumping bass at the start I just love it, this song to me is the one you just want to stand up and do flea type head banging to, its so damned funky. The guitaring in this song I also love as it adds a new layer to the song, although lyrically this is a week song and I don’t enjoy it that much my score is being boosted up by the instruments in the background which make it great. If you listen to the song without taking into account the lyrics and just listen to the music its has to be one of the best on the album I think. I like the speed of this song too, fits well with the album feeling at the time. 4/5

My Lovely Man:

This song is dedicated to the memory of Hillel Slovak R.I.P. The guitar here is the best part to the song and the drumming and Flea’s bass although it is noticeable takes a second position in the song.” but I now you won’t come back”. this is the feeling of loss from Anthony of one of his greatest friends. The solo in this song is extraordinary it really is. At Hyde park when I heard this I was like wooooow, best solo in the album I think. Shame that Anthony sang over it at Hyde park eh? Hehe. The idea of funk is also shown a lot here because the bass and guitar seem to work together and fit in gaps so it sounds like there are layers to the song. Although this song is about a sad subject the Peppers seem to be able to put the message of missing and sadness across in a vibrant happy way. R.I.P. Hillel 4.5/5

Sir Psycho Sexy:

Another song about sex I think is overdue…here is comes, this 8 minute beast of a song really is the pinnacle of funk on this album. The drumming which is slow and funky and is a great background to the popping bass of flea on the top and the great strumming of John on the guitar which really makes the song. “I got stopped by a lady cop in my car she said get out and spread your legs and then she tried to cop a feel, that cop she was all dressed in blue, was she pretty? Boy I’m telling you, she struck my butt with her big black stick, I said what’s up now suck my dick…..on her crotch so very warm I could feel her getting wet through her uniform…whoo that’s tight…turned a cherry pie right into jam” that is such a great lyric scheme and is funny at the same time. Its so funky too with the guitar playing along and the bass pumping in the background, magical! “your pussy I’d kill” hehe sorry, had to put that! After 4 mins though the music slows down and become very mellow and slower than it was. This part after about 3 mins is my favourite part in the song personally. The part at the end with no lyrics and just the instrument is so lovely and especially the guitar from john, really does sound wonderful! This continues for another 2 mins then finally dies away, magical! 4/5

They’re Red Hot:

Personally I think this is a bit of a silly end to such a beautiful album, I don’t see any need for it, just that it says red hot in the name. The drumming and speed of the guitaring and bass playing in here I am impressed with very much though. It is funky but as good as some other examples in the album. Also I am impressed that Anthony can sing that fast and make it make sense. 2/5

THE END! Ollie!
