“We’re probably looking at getting together in September and getting on a roll and starting to write songs for the next record.”

Red Hot Chili Peppers writing recording new album September Fall 2013 Chad Smith Billboard Interview

Autumn's sweet we call it fall...

“We always have little ideas percolating in jams and rehearsal warm-ups and sound checks and gigs. Sometimes we bust into stuff… We just kind of play whatever, so we always have those little tidbits. But we don’t have any fully-formed songs until the four of us get in a room together. That’s when the real writing process starts. So, yeah, we’re looking at the fall.”

The Red Hot Chili Peppers still have a number of shows on their schedule for 2013, including a co-headlining spot on Metallica’s Orion Music + More bash in Chad Smith’s home town of Detroit on June 8th, 2013.

“There’s probably an outstanding warrant or something from 1984 when I was trying to swim across (the Detroit River), y’know?” Smith says with a laugh. “We have the same managers as Metallica (QPrime) and they probably looked at our schedule and said, ‘Oh, maybe the Chili Peppers will do it.’ And we’ve known those guys for years, so we said, ‘Yeah!’ right off the bat. There’s a lot of cool stuff to do there… It’s not just the usual go and see bands. So we’re really looking forward to it.”

2013 also marks Chad Smith’s 25th anniversary with the Red Hot Chili Peppers. Does he expect a watch – or a gold-plated tube sock?

“I don’t know. We’ll see,” he says. “I like watches; I’ll get more use out of that than the sock. But it really feels like 24 minutes, y’know? I just think it’s great that they’ve been a band this long and we’re still relevant and playing music that we love and people still connect to. It’s crazy. I would have never thought 25 years ago this would have happened like it has. We were a pretty volatile bunch back then. There’s been a lot of ups and downs. But I think as we grow older and maybe grow up a little bit that we realize we’ve got this special chemistry and we make this music that people love all over the world. I’ve got a good job.”

Smith has a new job, too. He’s been tapped by MusicRadar to create a series of podcasts titled “Chad Smith in Conversation.” It began last month with Rush’s Alex Lifeson, and Smith says future guests on his radar include former Faces keyboardist Ian McLagan, Florence Welch, Pearl Jam’s Stone Gossard and even Elton John, who Smith says reached out to be part of the series. “The idea is for me to get with people I know or musicians that I know, and it’s not, like, typical question and answer,” Smith says. “It’s just a conversation. It’s a lot of fun and something different to do.”

While the Chili Peppers wait to reconvene in the studio, Smith has also been busy moonlighting as producer Rick Rubin’s go-to session drummer. He’s recently played sessions for a solo album by Sugarland’s Jennifer Nettles, though he confesses to being “a little jealous” that Rubin tapped Rage Against the Machine’s Brad Wilk for Black Sabbath’s upcoming “13.”

“But it sounds good, man, heavy as fuck,” Smith notes. “Brad did a really great job, which shouldn’t be a surprise, y’know?”

The Red Hot Chili Peppers played their first live tour concert 30 YEARS ago TODAY! On February 13th, 1983, frontman Anthony Kiedis, Bass Guitarist Flea (Michael Balzary), Lead Guitarist Hillel Slovak and Drummer Jack Irons treated 30 spectators to their inimitable dose of adolescent funk rap, sex punk fusion at the Rhythm Lounge in Hollywood, California.

The original lineup first came together at L.A.’s Fairfax High School, where they formed the band under the short-lived name of Tony Flow and the Miraculously Majestic Masters of Mayhem. Anthony Kiedis first started as an introductory MC for his friends previous bands, but on this occassion he would join Flea, Hillel and Jack on stage.

Opening for the band, Neighbor’s Voices at the Rhythm Lounge, the foursome played only one song titled, “Out in L.A”, which was originally based on a guitar riff that Hillel Slovak wrote while jamming with Jack Irons, and was not meant to become a real song until Anthony Kiedis decided to rap over the instrumental.

Following their first performance, The Rhythm Lounge’s owner was so impressed that he invited the band to return the following week, except with two songs. Equipped with a second song, “Get up and Jump”, the band returned to the Rhythm Lounge for another two shows in 1983. After several more shows the band changed their name to the Red Hot Chili Peppers in early March, 1983. The band continued to add more songs to their repetoire and played over 25 gigs in California in their first year together.

Anthony Kiedis described the performance in his autobiography, Scar Tissue.
“All the anticipation of the moment hit me, and I instinctively knew that the miracle of manipulating energy and tapping into an infinite source of power and harnessing it in a small space with your friends was what I had been put on this earth to do.”

Flea also described the first performance.
“I had a bass line and had Hillel do guitar to it, and then we went to the show and played and people love it. We had a whole choreographed dance thing. We did our dance and then played “Out In L.A.” and it was pretty fucking explosive. We did it and it was just BAM! From the first note. A five-minute set. Anthony came with a boom box and the dance, and then the song — it was like two minutes. Sometimes bands just sort of creep into it and find their way, and bam — for us it was from the get-go.”

Silverlake Conservatory of Music Benefit Auction on Flea's 50th Birthday

Silverlake Conservatory of Music Benefit Auction on Flea's 50th Birthday

LA can be brutal.

What am I doing here? Why am I so far from home, living in an area primarily dominated by people trying to be famous? The stereotypes far too often ring true.

But when I arrived at Flea’s Los Feliz house a few hours before his 50th birthday party and The Silverlake Conservatory of Music Fundraiser began, I had a feeling I’d remember everything I love about the sometimes seemingly morally decrepit city.

This place can be magical. Here I am about to get a chance to spend an equal amount of time as Rolling Stone and CNN with one of the most legendary and charismatic bass players of all time, discussing a subject he actually wants to talk about.

And that’s just it. Seconds after meeting him, it became very apparent how near and dear the Silverlake Conservatory of Music was to the overwhelmed Flea.

“Anything worth doing good takes a little chaos,” he told me.

The goal of the night was to raise a significant portion of the money needed to purchase a new building for the Conservatory. Artist Dana Louise Kirkpatrick made the invitation for the evening (Main Image), and managed to wrangle art pieces by Raymond Pettibon, Shepard Fairey, Banksy and Takashi Murakami amongst others for a silent auction. Bidding wars took place between Edward Norton, Tony Hawk, Rick Rubin, Owen Wilson and other guests (especially UFC’s Dana White) ready to drop a pretty penny for the cause, some of which spent over six figures.

Rancid performed, as did Ben Harper and The Red Hot Chili Peppers. I’m gloating a little, but just let me have a moment as I relive what is surely to be a permanent memory. I wish it were everyday that I was watching “Soul To Squeeze” in the backyard of the person who wrote it, but it’s simply not my reality.

Yes, Los Angeles is beautiful. And hearing the story of The Silverlake Conservatory of Music from it’s founder I was reminded there is so much more out here than what’s on the surface. LA has depth, culture and history. You just have to look in the right place.

Thank you Flea for all that you do and all of who you are.

Deroche: Why the Silverlake Conservatory of Music?

Flea: I grew up in Los Angeles in public school, and I come from a pretty low income family. When I was in school you could pick any instrument you want and they’d teach you how to play it. That changed my life. I loved playing music in school and it sent me on my path as a musician.

Shortly after I graduated high school they passed Proposition 13, Reagonomics, and they cut out a lot of the art programs in the LA schools and kids stopped having that opportunity. About 13-14 years ago, I went back to my alma mater, Fairfax high school, and ran into the music teacher. She invited me to come speak to the kids about the viability of a music career. When I went into the room where I used to play everyday in a big orchestra, they had nothing!

No instruments, a volunteer teacher, a boombox… they listened to music and talked about it.

I was just shocked. I couldn’t believe it. This vibrant thing, just done. So I decided to start a music school. Whatever it takes, I’ll pay for it. So we rented and built out a space and started a music school in Silverlake called the Silverlake Conservatory of Music. It’s a nonprofit school, we’ve been going now for 11 years. It’s flourishing. We have 700 students, about 200 of whom go for free.

We teach all the orchestral instruments, all the band instruments, we have group classes, private classes, adult’s choir, children’s choir, big orchestra, we got it all going on. It just takes a lot to run it, man.

I paid for it all by myself to a certain point and then just couldn’t, so we’ve been vigilant about raising money. Our goal now is to get our own building where we can have a performance space, have room for group classes, be able to have twice the student body, be able to have more scholarship students cause we’re packed where we are. We just want to be able to serve better.

The idea is for this music school to be an institution that is flourishing long after we’re gone. To keep it rolling, you know? It takes dough, man. So that’s what we’re doing tonight, and we have our eye on this building we want to get on Hollywood and Edgemont that’s really fucking cool and the perfect spot.

Deroche: Why Silverlake?

Flea: It’s a community that I’ve lived in for a long time and I really like it. All communities have their value of course, but it’s pretty ethnically and economically mixed compared to a lot of places. It’s changed a lot over the years since I first lived there in the early 80′s. I live here in Los Feliz and it’s nearby. It’s all about making the school happen and it takes a lot of work. It’s a huge part of my life outside of my professional life with the band. I spend a lot of energy day in and day out keeping the school together.

Deroche: Do you have any stories about any of the students that have stuck out to you?

Flea: There’s so many. We’ve had thousands of kids come through in the last 11 years. I haven’t taught there a lot because I’m working so much in my professional life. But about five years ago, I had about a six-month period where I taught and there was this one kid that I was teaching to play the trumpet.

He’d had kind of a difficult time, he had been tossed around from foster home to foster home, government institutions and stuff. It’s a rough life for a kid. When I started teaching him he was a pretty troubled kid, but he had this determination to him. He’d put the trumpet to his lips and you’d see this look in his eyes. He’s going for it so hard, and I could just feel this intensity and desire. To make matters short, he’s now at USC and I know that the music was a huge thing for him. He’s in the music department, and he’s doing great.

That’s just one. Little triumphs all the time, there’s all kinds of kids.

Just so people know, the Silverlake Conservatory of Music is not at all about celebrity or fame or being a star. It’s an academic music school.

Deroche:
What would LA be without music?

Flea:
The answer to that question is – if you have to ask, you will never know.

I know that you know the answer, so I’m not directing that at you.

I was a kid in the street robbing houses, doing drugs, heading for crime. I got to go to school everyday and play my trumpet in my junior high, and it gave me something to believe in.

Music is the voice of God, man. It’s the thing that keeps us together. It crosses every boundary that exists. Every boundary. I’m talking about boundaries to other dimensions beyond ethnic, economic, social-economic and every boundary.

Music brings us together. Music is the voice of the people. Music is love. Music saved my life.

By Denise Quan, CNN – Published October 17th, 2012

October 16th marked Flea’s 50th birthday, and the iconic bass player of the Red Hot Chili Peppers held an event celebrating both his life and his life’s focus on giving back.

An army of caterers scurried around his Los Angeles backyard on Tuesday, preparing for a party that was a birthday bash as well as a fundraiser for the Silverlake Conservatory of Music, the nonprofit school Flea co-founded 11 years ago.

Flea’s days of rock star excess are clearly over — unless you count the silent auction, where a Banksy drawing of a rat fetched $100,000 and a spirited bidding war erupted between actor Owen Wilson, musician Ben Harper and producer Rick Rubin over a crayon-colored cashmere blanket that ultimately sold for $2,250.

Shortly before his guests arrived, Flea reflected on the first half-century of his life — which has been just as colorful as the cashmere blanket that caused such a ruckus during the silent auction.

With the Red Hot Chili Peppers, he’s won seven Grammys, pioneered a bold style of rock infused with funk and rap, overcome drug dependency and earned induction into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. On his own, Flea’s found purpose and personal satisfaction in giving back.

CNN: Happy Birthday, Flea! 50. How does it feel?

Flea: Outstanding! I woke up this morning and I just felt so grateful for everything. Grateful to be alive, grateful to be exactly where I am. I give and receive love every day, (and) I feel creatively vibrant. I have some great friends; I feel like I’m capable of giving a lot to the world. And ultimately, that’s what I really care about, is just giving.

CNN: Tonight you’re also holding a benefit for the Silverlake Conservatory of Music, which you co-founded 11 years ago.

Flea: The Silverlake Conservatory is a nonprofit music school in Los Angeles where we teach music, mostly to kids, but to people of all ages — people who are old, people with beards, all kinds of people. But we teach all the orchestral instruments, all the band instruments, group lessons, private lessons, orchestra, adult choir, children’s choir, all kinds of music groups. And we’re not about fame or celebrity or anything like that. We’re academic, teaching theory and fundamentals of music and technique on a particular instrument. Unfortunately, the public school system has cut the funding to music programs, and there’s a big void, so we’re doing our best to fill it in our community.

CNN: What made you decide to bring the annual fundraiser to your own home this year?

Flea: Well, I’ve done it before, but this is a special night tonight. We’ve had incredible fine artists donate to our auction tonight — Damien Hirst, Takashi Murakami, Banksy, Matt Monahan, Laura Schnitger, Barry McGee, Ed Ruscha. Some of the great people in the contemporary art world have come out to support our music education.

The Red Hot Chili Peppers are playing tonight, Rancid is playing tonight, and it’s all happening in my backyard, and it’s my birthday. You know, 11 years ago we had the opening night for the school party and it was on my birthday. So it’s always an incredible birthday to have. In a minute, I’m going to go shower, put on my suit, and it’s on.

CNN: When you woke up this morning, did you reflect back?

Flea: Yeah, turning 50 is a little bit of a taking stock moment. I feel probably a little dumber. I don’t think I’m as sharp as I was when I was younger, but I’m definitely wiser, and less likely to make gigantic blunders of an intellectual, spiritual, emotional or physical type. Less likely to do something dumb, but I’m not as quick. I feel a little bit wiser, but more than anything the passion for the things that I really care about like playing music, and being kind, and children, and the things I love — sports, books, art — my passion for all these things has deepened. It just feels like there’s an infinite well of greatness to get into. I just feel like I go deeper and deeper into it. I feel like I have a profound spiritual life, as well.

CNN: When you were young, did you ever think you would achieve the level of musical success that you’ve had?

Flea: No. I’ve always kind of been an in-the-moment kind of person. I don’t think that far in advance or have any idea what’s around the next corner. And I never have. I just kind of try to make the best decisions as they come up. And as life has gone on, I really have faith in that philosophy a lot. I really have faith that each thing that comes up is a gift, and I’m grateful for the opportunity, whether it be a difficult thing or a fun thing.

CNN: You’ve been in the Chili Peppers for more than half your life. Do you see yourself continuing with them for eternity?

Flea: I love the Chili Peppers, and I would love to. If there’s anything I know, it’s every time you start making plans, you don’t know what’s going to come up next. Anything can happen. So I love being in the Chili Peppers and it’s my home, and I’ve been doing it for more than half my life. Of course, during the course of doing it, there’s been all kinds of ups and downs, and moments of extreme (positivity), floating on clouds of greatness, and times of just groveling, and misery, and uncertainty, and anger, and love and all those things. Like being in a family. I really can’t predict. But I love being in it for now, and right now, about as far as I’m thinking is getting through this tour that we’re doing, performing at the highest level possible, then hunkering down and writing another record.

CNN:
You also keep busy with side projects. You performed with Patti Smith a couple of days ago, then you have the Atoms for Peace project. Where is that going?

Flea: Wherever it goes, it goes. I’ve been very fortunate to play with some great artists in my life, and Patti is one of them. I love her to death. I’d do anything for her. And if she says, “Flea, come play,” I come. She’s just the greatest. And my thing with Thom (Yorke from Radiohead), Atoms for Peace — Thom, and Nigel (Godrich), and Mauro (Refosco) and Joey (Waronker) — is just fun, and I’m grateful for that, as well. I love those guys.

CNN: Looking back on your 50 years, is there anything you’d do differently?

Flea: Nothing!

CNN: It must be nice to wake up in the morning and think that.

Flea: Yeah. Of course. I’ve made a billion mistakes, but I wouldn’t have learned without making them. I needed to make errors, and misbehave, and be an insensitive, thoughtless person to work my hardest on becoming a kind, caring one.

CNN: So when you blow out the candles on your birthday cake, what are you going to be wishing for?

Flea: A Lakers world championship.

Flea says his Helen Burns EP is not rhcp music or even close to it. It's a trippy freakout.

The EP was recorded shortly after the Stadium Arcadium Tour and will feature mostly instrumental songs, with Flea playing most of the instruments, including Trumpet, Bass, Synthesizers, Drum machine, Piano, and a “bunch of other shit”. American singer/songwriter, Patti Smith will also perform vocals on at least one track. In one of his tweets Flea described the sound as “not rhcp music or even close to it. it is a trippy freakout”.

The Helen Burns EP will be available in digital and vinyl formats. Fans will be able to specify how much they’d like to pay for the digital version. An autographed vinyl version will also be released for $75.00, which also includes a piece of Flea’s Bass String which was used during one of the Red Hot Chili Peppers’ Concerts.

Josh Klinghoffer reveals more info about I'm With You B-Sides

Almost exactly a year after releasing I’m With You, their first album with guitarist Josh Klinghoffer, the Red Hot Chili Peppers will stagger the release of 17 unheard outtakes from those sessions over the next several months, both digitally and on seven-inch vinyl singles.

Beginning in August, the band will issue two songs at a time on nine separate 45s, with one exception: an eight-minute rocker captured in a single studio take that will occupy both sides of a single, as Klinghoffer told Rolling Stone from a recent tour stop in Berne, Switzerland.

“We’re going to have to do that old trick where it fades out and fades back in on the B-side,” he said of “In Love, Dying,” one of the tracks Warner Bros. has not yet officially named. In June the label announced only six titles: “Strange Man” b/w “Long Progression” (due August 14th); “Magpies” b/w “Victorian Machinery” (September 11th); and “Never is a Long Time” b/w “Love of Your Life” (October 2nd).

Here’s an exclusive look at the first two of the sets nine forthcoming seven-inch singles jacket covers by Kelsey Brookes!

“These songs were always sort of kicking around, and we always intended on putting them out in one way or another,” Klinghoffer said. “It’s not as much of a splash, but it’s really all working out for the better. To be honest, there’s certain songs that, when we initially came up with the sequence for the record, I was a little like, ‘Hmmm, we’re not putting that one on?’”

One of those included “Long Progression,” which will serve as the B-side of the first seven-inch (it was sacrificed for “Goodbye Hooray” at the last minute). Another cut, “Victorian Machinery,” “sounds like a big three-headed monster playing drums,” Klinghoffer said, adding that the band captured “absolute magic” with “Never Is a Long Time,” a “pop-tastic” number featuring Greg Kurstin on piano.

“It’s really one of those cases where they had too many good songs to fit on an album,” said Kurstin, who also played on 1999′s Californication. “They have this cohesive thing in the studio – when they get that take, that’s the take that they keep.”

After joining the band in July 2009, Klinghoffer wrote and practiced with frontman Anthony Kiedis, bassist Flea and drummer Chad Smith for almost a year before they recorded several albums’ worth of material between September 2010 and the following February. Rather than release it all as a double album, as they did with their previous one, 2006′s Stadium Arcadium, the group preserved the best of the outtakes for this collection.

“It’s always difficult, but we use a democratic process and the songs with the most votes are usually the backbone of the album,” producer Rick Rubin wrote in an email. “I can just say as is always the case, some of my personal favorites don’t make the cut. I’m sure everyone in the band can tell you the same.”

Klinghoffer said that the remaining 17 unreleased songs from the I’m With You sessions – they recorded 48, after all – could eventually see the light of day. “It’s possible,” he said. “We just had so much material back then that certain things just straight-up didn’t get enough attention. There’s a couple that will probably just remain in our iPods.”

Meanwhile, though Josh Klinghoffer said RHCP have not written any official songs while on the road, he noted that the band demoed some material during Anthony Kiedis’ recovery from foot surgery, which postponed their tour for two months earlier this year.
