Chad Smith talks to iDrum Magazine in a two part video interview about the Red Hot Chili Peppers’ latest album and tour. We get a closer look at Chad’s custom acrylic, etched glass Pearl drum kit, courtesy of his Drum technician Chris Warren, and I’m With You Tour percussionist, Mauro Refosco also talks briefly about how he came to play with the band.
For over 30 years we have enjoyed Chad Smith’s beats and the bombastic drummer shows no signs of slowing up.
“We’re just a bunch of knuckleheads from Hollywood; I didn’t think it would last a month!”
Most people don’t even get to spend 30 years in a long-term relationship and there are very few bands that can claim that level of commitment but Chad Smith, Flea and Anthony Kiedis seem to have found the magic formula as Red Hot Chili Peppers release I’m With You and hit the road for some seriously big shows.
Captain Fantastic/Mr Bombastic
Chad Smith’s own recording output over the past couple of years has been nothing short of sensational with various Bombastic Meatbats and Chickenfoot recordings allowing us to hear Smith’s kicking grooves and knock-out beats in different musical settings, permitting him to show just what he has up his sleeve and in his pocket! And, let’s not forget Chad Smith’s other recordings with the Dixie Chicks, Kid Rock, Brandi Carlile and others.
From bandleader to co-creator, Smith’s energy and passion for drumming seems to have got bigger and all the more powerful where most players would be settling for far less at this stage of their career.
With Chad Smith’s other musical projects sidelined, or ‘deps’ found in the case of Chickenfoot, with Kenny Aronoff filling Chad’s shoes for their upcoming tour, it’s time to get back to his long-term musical association with Anthony Kiedis, Flea and new boy Josh Klinghoffer who joins the fray as the Red Hot Chili Peppers unleash I’m With You.
RHCP are to be inducted, and rightly so, into the Rock ‘n’ Roll Hall of Fame 2012 and on the back of playing some of the best shows the band has ever performed, the Red Hot Chili Peppers are riding the crest of an enormous wave, with their lifelong fans enjoying wildly energised shows, rekindling that connection with four stellar musicians who cannot help but shake everything they got! This time out, the Red Hot Chili Peppers are also joined by Brazilian percussionist Mauro Refosco who also features on I’m With You. After witnessing RHCP’s show at the 02 Arena in London, Chad Smith and Mauro Refosco have clearly bonded heavily, making a formidable drums and percussion combination.
He’s With Us
In this second part of the iDrum interview, Chad Smith talks about I’m With You, the tour, having Mauro Refosco out on the road with RHCP and how he is looking forward to playing Knebworth, something he intends to do between competing in the decathlon at the Olympics and playing The Stadium of Light!
Chad also talks of his friendship with Sammy Hagar and how Chickenfoot and The Bombastic Meatbats hiatus is working out, along with the joys of recording and working with other musicians outside of the Red Hot Chili Peppers. Plus, Chad Smith’s drum tech Chris Warren gives us a guided tour of Chad’s new Etched Glass Pearl kit built especially for the tour!
